We do not crop ears on our Danes. We consider it unnecessary mutilation of a beautiful animal. There is always a risk to any animal that is put under anesthetic for whatever reason, and to take this chance at such a young age, is truly gambling with a tiny puppies life for no good reason. There is no benefit to ear cropping. If they were supposed to have stand up pointed ears, surely God would have made them that way, as he did with a German Shepherd. It is extremely painful for the dog, and very often the ears do not stand anyway, or worse still, one does and the other does not. It usually requires months of taping, and the dog is not allowed to play with any other animal in case his bandages get pulled off, and it takes a lot of dedication on the part of the owner too. Not only is it Barbaric, but is punishable by law if done in many countries in Europe, not least of which is the United Kingdom. The procedure is not recommended by the AVMA, and many veterinarians will no longer do this surgery. We at Windsor Farm feel that ear cropping belongs in the dark ages, and it is time to waken up and consider the animals welfare, instead of your own. If you feel you have to do this, at least do some research and find out just what it entails, and what you and your Great Dane will have to endure for many, many months. The other thing you might consider would be to buy a dog that has natural upright ears, instead of a beautiful, natural eared Great Dane.
